One little but rich inlet embraces the town of Veli (Big) Losinj at the south-eastern part of the island of Losinj and in the bottom of the mountain St.Ivan’s Hill. Veli Losinj has got about one thousand inhabitants and by size it is the third on that scale among all cities of the islands Cres and Losinj archipelago. Its character describes high houses, plentiful deluxe villas and the big tower in the very centre of the city.

Formerly, in history, the city of Veli Losinj (once called Velo Selo) as a matter of a fact was bigger than the city of Mali (Small) Losinj. Nowadays, the city of Mali Losinj became bigger and more developed because of better geographic situation that helped for expansion of seamanship and course-plotting. So, the conclusion is that the given names of these two cities in present time are not a sign of their accurate sizes.

In the city of Veli Losinj, ther is a lot of history to be seen. You can start from the great baroque church of St. Anthony the Great in the company of a tall bell tower. Already in 16th century there was constructed a crenellation with a purpose of protecting the Veli Losinjs port from attacks from the sea. Heraldic sign, emblem or a symbol – the motif of this tower can be found to represent the city of Veli Losinj.

Don’t miss to visit chapel of St. Nicholas dating somewhere in 15th century. Namely, it is a place where it all began for the city of Veli Losinj – it was the first populated part from where this city developed further on.
Ex-captains and nobles left numerous lush villas that are also a kind of a motif that can be seen when walking through the streets of Veli Losinj.
The city of Veli Losinj is also a proud possessor of a grand Park in the vicinity of the hospital which holds about two hundred or even more sorts of plant life.

The mood of a fisherman city you can get a bit away from the very centre of the city, in a place called Rovenska Bay. In the region of this small quay, there are many houses and places to grab a bite of Veli Losinjs traditional cooking. Of course, I am talking about restaurants.
