The Istrian peninsula is crammed with attractive walled old villages on the seashore but few are as attractive as Novigrad. The center of the old town lies on a limestone peninsula that has been once an island. Medieval walls topped with restored crenellated towers run along the port and also the ancient center is abounding with fifteenth to eighteenth-century houses and palaces. A sightseeing spotlight of Novigrad is the baroque Rigo Palace with a exquisitly sculpted facade. The top of the island is dedicated to a park shaded with parasol pines and there’s a lungomare – seaside promenade – that runs along the coast to the Novigrad marina, just about the most sheltered in the Adriatic sea.
