The harbour of the city of Hvar is to be found on a fitting spot for a seaport secluded by islands, creating it to be a safe place for boats hiding from winds. The ferry Split-Hvar-Korčula-Dubrovnik routinely stops at the port. This fact helps the city of Hvar to preserve its position as the heart of island’s tourism.

Jelsa is a silent, attractive and interesting little city bordered by pine woods. Its facades are elegant and are made in far 19th century. Ancient Romans and Greeks have left their influence in culture and monuments of this island. Grapeeva špilja is a crib of civilization on the island of Hvar and is significant for the whole Neolithic Mediterranean area. Some interesting unanswered questions from the past of Jelsa tempt us to think about ancient times. Yet, the city of Jelsa is one of the most vivid places on the island. Once upon a time the city of Jelsa was a settlement based on good sea navigators and vine. In present times for the most part it lives on tourism.

Stari Grad (Faros) represents a spirit of past times on the island Hvar (ancient Pharos). Many monuments are just glorious leftovers from a rich and long history of this city, in its urban structure. Markers of millennium long city life are the walls of Pharos, Roman mosaics, the church of St. John, street complex built in the middle ages above the renaissance fortified citadel. A stroll through the Stari Grad centre with its thin streets and tiny squares fetches you the soft voice of the ancient times.

Residences are rural, close to the road, but opened in the back and are connected on the courtyards by a chain of curves. This form of construction gives you an idea about the disposition of the city which was pretty much defensive. For the period of Venetian rule this city was at the spot where three borders met – Venetian, Turkish and Dubrovnik (the state).
