Hvar – the Ruby of Adriatic
Hvar belongs to group centrally-Dalmatian islands in Croatian Adriatic Sea. Its length is 72 km and his wider part is 10,5 km. Common length of his shore is 299.7 km2 which made it the fourth biggest island by surface among Croatian islands.
There is no such place in the world where you can found on one island such a great tourist offer and a number of advantages for all of its visitors like on the island of Hvar. Tourists clinch on its gorgeous hidden places, without having any thoughts about the origins of such harmony of climate, weather, sea, landscape. Usually there are about 2726 sunny hours. The maximum of 3053 hours was reached in year 2003. Compared to Alexandria, Hvar has, during the summer period, even clearer and sunnier sky.
Larger towns on the island are Hvar, Stari Grad, Jelsa and Sučuraj. The city of Hvar is a unique synthesis of luxurious Mediterranean nature, prosperous cultural and historical inheritance. Sućuraj (San Giorgio in Italian) is a charming small town on the east cape of the island of Hvar. Sućuraj has about 400 inhabitants, all primary occupied by tourism and fishing. Stari Grad is a little town on the northern side of Hvar island. Its municipality has a population of almost 3,000. Stari Grad, in English translation Old Town, is the place where some of the oldest human settlements were found. Jelsa is a small town positioned in a cove on the north central port of the island of Hvar. It is enclosed by rich olive groves, beautiful vineyards and with inevitable Mediterranean flora. Jelsa brings you to calmness of blue bay, whose beaches are a magnet for visitors from all over the world.
However, we can not forget about the other tiny towns like Brusje, Velo Grablje, Mlina and Sveta Nedilja. Brusje is a village about 6 km east of Hvar. At first it was a shepherds’ settlement, later on a village developed on wine, olive oil, rosemary oil and honey. If you go east for 5 more kilometres, you’ll come to Velo Grablje. It is proud to be origin of some of the supreme lavender oil makers in Europe.
Milna is a village situated also east of the city of Hvar, about 4 km. It offers you two pebbled beaches and a gentle and woody coast with pine-trees, vineyards, agaves, and olive trees. Sveta Nedilja is a village situated on vertical and sunny hills of the island of Hvar. It is an exceptional spot for growing vineyards, so the place is known for its wine making.
