Cities of The island of Vis





I will tell you little bit more only about the city of Vis and the city of Komiza on the island of Vis. Those two are the most attractive and the most visited ones. In cities of Vis and Korcula you can find islands the most important settlements and infrastructure as well. This island is not very big, so I believe you can imagine this fact.
The city of Vis is to be found in quite large and secluded cove (the cove of St. Juraj) on the north eastern part of the island of Vis and in front of the island of Hvar. Docks of Vis are placed in south western part of the cove. This port is pretty much secluded and protected from influences of open sea by little isle of Host (given name after William Hoste) and peninsula Prirovo (Prilovo). There are also some other ports, positioned in Kurt and Stonca (parts of the city of Vis), but they are less significant.

The city of Vis has got two fields (Dračevo and Velo polje/field) and is luckily cut out from them by 300 metres tall mounds. Those hills are important for the locals and their vineyards as the most important resource of earnings. Milna, Rukavac, Srebrna, Stiniva, Stončica are small villages which are also officially parts of the city of Vis. They are placed in little coves and have powerful inclination of becoming new towns. These little inlets together with villages hiding in them are, as well as the city of Vis itself, major resource of tourist profits.

The very first settlement in the position of today’s city of Vis was made in the 4th century BC under the name of Issa, by Greek colonists from Sicily. Those Greeks were mainly attracted by Issa’s geographic situation. Namely, Vis provides an opportunity to control activities of ships travelling in Adriatic Sea. This historic Issa took place for its development as the metropolitan and financial centre of Dalmatia and provided the best military support for colonization of places in the neighbourhood of present city of Split.

The city of Komiža is a township and a port on the west coast of the Vis island. It is to be found at the bottom of the hill Hum (587 metres). Komiza is placed in a deep cove, whose east shore flourishes with big and pleasant beaches of pebbles. Just ask for Velo Zalo, Gusarica, Kamenica or Nova Posta.

As an addition to the unique ambience of summer evenings there are often some performances as for example singing groups or children’s choirs on the boulevard or in local restaurants.
A lots of various cultural events and exhibitions are organised on regular bases and particularly when Komizas natives, Croats from the USA, come on vacation to their mother country.

The city of Komiza is famous for its vicinity to the island of Bisevo, visited by 10.000 visitors each and every year. Namely, they come to see the exceptional Blue Cave (Modra Spilja). The city of Komiza is also residence to Joze Borcic’s worldwide ballet school. In this school students do modern jazz dance, pop and the ballet itself to entertain visitors during the summer.
