Brac Geography and Clime

Thanks to Vidova gora (778m), Brač is the highest island in the Adriatic Sea. It is the biggest island in Middle Dalmatia and third by size among all Adriatic islands. Area of Brač consists of 354, 57 sq km.

On coordinate system it is placed on Lat: 43.34º N Long : 16.65º E. Length of its seaside line is 111, 8 km (skale 1:1000000). It is placed 12 kilometres right in opposite of Split which is the centre and the biggest city in Dalmatia with almost 200.000 inhabitants.

As an island, Brač is separated from land by Brački canal which is exposed to strong gust of wind (bura) that blows fan like from direction of Vrulje, Omiš and Stobreč on the shore. Anchorages sheltered from wind are in coves Pučišće and Povlja on the bank of Brač.

After a strong raining period river Cetina, which empties into the sea nearby Omiš, rises and causes the current with speed of 2.5 knots. This information can be considered as a warning for sailors.

West of Brač is the island Šolta, and on its southern side is the island Hvar.

Brac Clime

Climatic conditions on Brač are tipical mild Mediterranean. Characteristics of such clime are long, hot and dry summers and on the other side short, rainy winters. When you go on holidays on Brač, you can almost count with beautiful weather. Namely, summers on Brač offers you statistically 134 days of clear sky and 2600 sunny hours.

Temperature differences are disparaged by the influence of the sea. It is known that the sea has more stable temperatures, so you can see people swimming long into September.

Precipitations are varying during the year. We can say that the coldest part of the year is also the rainiest. The cold and rainy part of the year is in months from December to February.
Every time I visited Brač, the weather was perfect. Of course, perfect for me, my friends and family because our only interest was to have a nice time and to not wear umbrellas around. It was never too hot because of constant light wind that was clearing and cooling the air. By the water is always to expect a bit of muggy weather which here wasn’t the case. If there was a case of rainy weather it was for a very short time, just enough to meditate two of us in bed and listening raindrops dancing on window. Such or similar conditions are also to expect during the whole year. Only December and February are months to avoid.
